FatPort establishes Technical Advisory Board
Announces appointment of five industry and academic thought leaders
Feb 6, 2003 - Vancouver, BC - FatPort, Canada's largest high-speed wireless Internet
service provider, today announced the formation of a Technical Advisory Board to consult
and advise the executive and engineering teams on a range of technology, integration, and
usability issues.
The well-respected industry and academic leaders who sit on this board bring both
the comprehensive knowledge and diverse experience necessary to grasp FatPort's full market
potential and to provide varied external perspectives - essential to the company's continued
growth and success.
The first five members of the team include:
* Dr. James Cavers - Professor of Engineering Science, SFU
James K. Cavers received his BASc in Engineering Physics and PhD in Electrical Engineering
from UBC. A prolific author on the topic of the transmission and detection of signals in
radio channels, he is co-director of SFU's Mobile Communications Laboratory and holds a Canada
Research Chair in wireless communication. He was the 1998 recipient of the Principal Innovation
Award from the E.C. Manning Foundation, Canada.s most prestigious technology award. In 2002,
Dr. Cavers was named a IEEE fellow for "contributions to the theory and practice of digital
transmission over wireless channels."
* Dr. Dave Michelson - Adjunct Professor, UBC
David G. Michelson received his BASc, MASc, and PhD, all in Electrical Engineering, from
the University of British Columbia. Since 1994, Dr. Michelson has extensively studied RF
propagation, channel modeling, and wireless communications system design with MDA/NSERC
and AT&T. Since August 2001, he has served as a consultant to UBC's University Networking
Program as they deploy one of Canada's largest Wireless LAN's.
Dr. Michelson was appointed Adjunct Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at
UBC in August 2000 and became a full-time faculty member in January 2003. He is a Senior
Member of the IEEE and a member of the Applied Computational Electro-magnetics Society.
He serves as an Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology, chair of
the IEEE VT-S Technical Committee on Propagation and Channel Modeling, and chair of the
IEEE Vancouver Section's Joint Communications Chapter. A strong advocate of Linux and
Open Source software, he is the founder and chair of the Vancouver Linux Users Group.
* Dr. Ed Casas - Adjunct Professor, UBC
Ed Casas received his PhD in Electrical Engineering from the University of British
Columbia in 1989. Since 1983, Dr. Casas has focused on mobile data communication using
terrestrial and satellite based methods. As an adjunct professor at UBC, Dr. Casas supervises
graduate students in wireless communications. He is currently employed by Vivato Inc, a
manufacturer of advanced Wi-Fi infrastructure equipment.
* Mark Teolis - CTO, Peer 1
Mr. Teolis co-founded Peer 1 Network with Lance Tracey in August 1999. He is responsible for
the architecture, design, implementation and operation of the entire network. Prior Peer 1, Mr.
Teolis worked as a Network Engineer with AT&T Canada, Metronet and Starcom. Mr. Teolis
graduated from Concordia University in Montreal in 1987 with a BSc. degree.
* Dr. Loki Jorgenson . Director, Research, jaalaM Technologies
With a Ph.D. in computational physics from McGill University, Dr. Jorgenson has been active
in computation, physics and mathematics, visualization, and simulation for over 19 years. He
has published in areas as diverse as philosophy, graphics, educational technologies, statistical
mechanics, logic and number theory. Dr. Jorgenson is an Adjunct Professor of Mathematics at
Simon Fraser University where he was previously the Research Manager of the Center for
Experimental and Constructive Mathematics. He has headed research in numerous academic
projects from high performance computing to digital publishing, working closely with
private sector partners and government. He has also worked as an e-business consultant
with Idea Integration in the Bay area. At jaalaM, Dr. Jorgenson is responsible for leading
research efforts, and for creating practical collaborative efforts with academics and other
thought leaders.
"We are fortunate to have assembled this group of industry luminaries for our Technical
Advisory Board," said Ken Simpson, CTO of FatPort Corporation. "FatPort is committed to
technical innovation - this board will be both a catalyst for great ideas and a vital
outside perspective to keep us on track."
