FatPort Corporation and Mobitus Announce Merger
VANCOUVER BC, CANADA - (December 11, 2001): FatPort Corporation has announced that Mobitus
Communications will be merging its operations with FatPort and operating under the FatPort brand.
Under the terms, the Mobitus Communications division and its assets, including existing deployments
and strategic relationships, will become part of FatPort.
The Mobitus Communications project has provided customers of the premium coffee shop market
segment access to the Internet using Mobitus' wireless broadband network. With partners Radiant
Communications & 3Com Canada, Mobitus has deployed broadband wireless access points at both
Seattle's Best Coffee and Blenz Coffee in Yaletown, allowing customers with wireless-ready
laptops, Pocket PCs & other Wi-Fi-enabled portable devices to stay connected while out of
the office. Customers in these locations are able to check information on the Internet,
download e-mail and even access their corporate networks at speeds 300 times faster than
is currently available with wireless modems.
FatPort provides the systems and infrastructure that allows broadband wireless access providers
to generate revenue for their services, and equally important, allows customers of one network to
roam seamlessly on another network while providing revenue to both network providers.
"I am thrilled to have come to this agreement with FatPort, the leaders in this particular
space. This merger will give both our groups access to more resources than before, allowing us
to build a successful organization faster and more efficiently," said Michael Kuhlmann, President
and CEO of Mobitus. "I am thoroughly looking forward to working with the people at FatPort and am
excited about the synergies this merger represents."
"The FatPort business model is based on one thing," says Sean O'Mahony CEO of FatPort
orporation, "that is enabling our customers to generate revenue from the opportunity that
broadband wireless represents. There is no doubt that this is one of the most exciting spaces
in technology at the moment but unless revenue generation is part of the model from the outset
then providers are unlikely to succeed."
