FatPort signs multinational roaming agreement with Surf and Sip
FatPort monthly subscribers will have access to nearly 500 Wi-Fi enabled hotspots in the US, UK and Europe at no extra charge.
Vancouver, BC & San Francisco, CA (September 9, 2003): Strengthening the wireless revolution, FatPort, Canada’s largest wireless Internet service provider has signed a roaming agreement with Surf and Sip, one of the largest public Wi-Fi operators in the world. FatPort monthly subscribers will have access to nearly500 Wi-Fi enabled hotspots in the US, UK and Europe at no extra charge.
The move marks a significant maturation in the market. By working together, providers like Surf and Sip &FatPort are able to offer wider coverage to their customers with no additional roaming charges for monthly subscribers.
“Roaming is the obvious next step to offering our customers ubiquitous coverage,” states Sean O’Mahony, CEO of FatPort. “While often talked about as a good thing, this is one of the rare instances where networks are actually coming together to offer access. Our customers regularly email us with their travel plans asking where they can use their accounts. By offering roaming across the Surf and Sip network, we are significantly enhancing the value of the service we are providing.”
“We are the longest established and one of the largest networks in the US and the UK,” said Rick Ehrlinspiel, President & CEO of Surf and Sip. “Soon we will operate one of the largest Wi-Fi networks in Europe. Teaming up with FatPort to offer our customers access to a Canadian network is a natural step. Both of our networks are generating revenue and this is another way we can ensure a quality service to our new and existing customers to keep those customers engaged.”
Wireless Internet access, based on the 802.11b or Wi-Fi standard, is more popular than ever. Most manufacturers of laptops are including wireless hardware as a standard – and new hotspots are unwiring daily.
