Ignition Point & FatPort launch wireless service
Public Wireless Internet Access adds to Ignition Point's last-mile broadband strategy
VANCOUVER BC, CANADA - (March 13, 2002): Ignition Point announced today that it is entering
the broadband wireless Internet access market with the wireless provider, FatPort Corporation,
launching its service as part of the Ignition Point group of companies.
Ignition Point expects that the FatPort service offering, addressing the needs of a growing
and enthusiastic subscriber base, will see the company achieve a break- even position within 18
months. Following an initial $135,000 investment in the company, the Ignition Point Board has
approved further investment of up to $1.365 million in FatPort, subject to service uptake and
subscriber growth.
"Ignition Point companies focus on providing the "last-mile" of broadband access, where ever it
is required," said Ignition Point President and CEO, Peter van der Gracht. "FatPort, in providing
Public Wireless Internet Access points throughout Western Canada, is well positioned to allow us to
join this rapidly developing market space while complementing our goals with TeraSpan."
"There are a growing number of people who want to do more than stay connected to messages and who
often work away from a base office," commented Sean O'Mahony CEO FatPort Corporation. "For most of
us, working productively now requires complete Internet access to allow for collaboration with
colleagues, document movement - the things people expect to be able to get the job done. For Fatport
subscribers this level of productivity is now possible."
FatPort operates a network of public broadband wireless access points that are hosted at various
partner locations, such as coffee houses and hotels. Focused on the Western Canadian market partner
locations include Seattle's Best Coffee in Yaletown Vancouver, where Fatport subscribers can access
the Internet via a secure, high speed, 802.11b wireless network.
"Our cafes are a showcase for our brand and we continue to evolve our caf environment with
the needs of our customers" explains Jay Garnett, president of Seattle's Best Coffee Canada. "The
growth of the internet has found its way into our coffee culture: our customers have a need to be
connected. This has been proven with the success of our test with the FatPort network in our
Yaletown caf ".
