FatPort Announces the Release of the FatPoint Product Family

FatPoints allow anyone to earn revenue from any location immediately using the FatPort network.

Vancouver, B.C. - July 17, 2002 - FatPort Corporation, an Ignition Point company, announced today the release of its FatPoint product family, a complete range of compact, robust and cost-effective wireless gateways, designed to meet the needs of: Locations Owners, Wireless Internet Service Providers (WISP), and Community Networks.

The FatPoint family is designed for simplicity. When FatPort ships a FatPoint Express to a location, such as a coffee shop, the owner merely plugs in the broadband connection (e.g. DSL or cable), powers the unit up and goes back to running their core business. No hassles, no configuration woes, no distractions. Their location is now on the FatPort network and can begin earning revenue immediately.

The FatPoint is also available as an OEM version to WISP's, community networks and developers. Together with a very powerful radio and a specially developed mini-version of OpenBSD embedded on a 32 MB Compact Flash card, the FatPoint OEM can be customized according to the specific needs of the service provider.

Nigel Ballard, a well respected wireless consultant at www.joejava.com commented:

"It was refreshing to discover that FatPort clearly understands the target market. Your potential Hot Spot operator is a coffee shop, bookstore or hotel lobby. These people understand lattes, literature and getting heads on beds, not hacking hardware or learning an open source language.

The FatPoint works right out of the box which is a first in this industry. I opened the packaging, plugged in a DSL connection and had a commercial wireless Hot Spot up and running in three minutes, impressive stuff.

I maintain that there is no real money in hot spots today, nor will there be riches tomorrow, but the day after I see the real potential of a gold rush. The trick is to land grab today, sign those agreements, install the hardware and build relationships.

That has been commercially impossible for single node locations as nobody has previously shipped a bespoke solution that was clearly fit for purpose. The FatPoint however is! Others will surely follow now that FatPoint has set the bar at a suitably high level".
